Impact of Feed Form (Pelleted vs. Mash) on Feed Intake and Growth Rate of Broilers
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
Feed represents the largest cost component in poultry production, accounting for up to 70% of total production costs. Therefore, improving feed efficiency is crucial for profitability. One important factor affecting feed utilization is feed form. Poultry feeds are often provided as mash, pellets, or crumbles. The physical form of feed influences feed intake, digestion, and growth performance (Abdollahi et al., 2013).
Pelleted feeds are believed to enhance feed intake and nutrient availability because they reduce feed wastage and improve digestibility (Amerah et al., 2007). However, pelleting involves additional processing costs, which may affect its economic feasibility. This study aims to assess the effect of feed form—pelleted versus mash—on feed intake, growth rate, and feed conversion ratio of broiler chickens.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many poultry farmers in developing countries use mash feed due to its lower cost, but this may lead to reduced growth performance. On the other hand, pelleted feed improves performance but may not be affordable for small-scale producers. There is limited empirical data comparing the two feed forms under tropical management conditions (Oluwatosin et al., 2020).
1.3 Objectives of the Study
-
To compare feed intake and growth performance of broilers fed pelleted and mash diets.
-
To determine the feed conversion efficiency for each feed form.
-
To evaluate the economic implications of feed form on broiler production.
1.4 Research Questions
-
How does feed form affect feed intake and growth performance of broilers?
-
Which feed form provides better feed conversion efficiency?
-
What are the economic benefits of pelleted feed compared to mash feed?
1.5 Significance of the Study
The study will help poultry farmers make informed decisions on feed processing and cost management. It will also provide scientific evidence on how feed form influences productivity and profitability in broiler production.
1.6 Scope and Limitation of the Study
The study will focus on broiler chickens from starter to finisher phases under controlled feeding conditions. Other feed forms such as crumbles will not be considered.
1.7 Definition of Terms
-
Feed Form: The physical presentation of feed such as mash or pellet.
-
Pelleted Feed: Feed compressed into small, hard particles.
-
Feed Intake: The amount of feed consumed by birds during a given period.
