1.1 Background to the Study
Poultry production plays a major role in ensuring food security and improving household income, particularly in tropical regions. Among the poultry species, layer chickens are highly valued for their consistent egg production and contribution to dietary protein intake. However, environmental stressors such as heat stress have become significant constraints to their productivity (Nwosu et al., 2021).
Heat stress occurs when chickens are exposed to temperatures beyond their comfort zone, typically above 30°C. Under such conditions, birds experience physiological strain that disrupts metabolic processes, feed intake, and overall performance. The impact of heat stress on layer chickens extends beyond reduced egg production; it also affects egg quality, fertility, and hatchability (Ayo et al., 2020). Since poultry cannot sweat, they rely on panting and reduced activity to cool down. Unfortunately, these coping mechanisms often result in energy loss and decreased feed efficiency.
In Nigeria and other tropical countries, climate change has intensified the problem of heat stress in poultry farms. Rising temperatures, coupled with poor ventilation and overcrowding, have led to a noticeable decline in egg output and fertility rates. Therefore, understanding how heat stress affects the reproductive performance of layer chickens is essential for developing adaptive management strategies. Implementing such measures can enhance resilience, maintain productivity, and ensure the economic sustainability of poultry farming in warm climates (Okonkwo and Oladimeji, 2022).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The negative impact of high ambient temperatures on poultry production has become increasingly evident in recent years. Many farmers report poor egg production, reduced hatchability, and lower fertility rates during hot seasons. Despite numerous studies on poultry physiology, there is limited practical knowledge about how heat stress directly influences reproductive functions in layers within tropical farm conditions. Without scientific insight into these physiological responses, farmers may continue to suffer economic losses due to uncontrolled heat stress.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of heat stress on the reproductive performance of layer chickens. The specific objectives are to:

1.6 Scope of the Study
The study will focus on commercial layer chickens raised in selected farms within a tropical climate. It will measure reproductive parameters such as egg production rate, egg quality, fertility, and hatchability under different temperature conditions. Physiological indicators such as body temperature, feed intake, and water consumption will also be monitored.
