1.0 Introduction
Urban centers across Nigeria face increasing challenges of environmental pollution, and one of the most pressing is plastic waste. Plastic waste pollution has become a global environmental concern due to its persistence and negative impact on natural and built environments. In cities like Abeokuta, Ogun State, the problem is particularly serious because plastic materials clog drainage systems and exacerbate flooding during the rainy season.
Unlike organic waste, plastics are non-biodegradable and can remain in the environment for decades. The increasing consumption of plastic products such as sachet water, shopping bags, and disposable containers contributes significantly to waste accumulation. As these plastics accumulate in drains and water channels, they block water flow, leading to severe flooding and infrastructure damage. This study therefore investigates the impact of plastic waste pollution on urban drainage systems in Abeokuta and explores measures to mitigate the associated environmental challenges.
1.1 Background to the Study
Urban drainage systems are designed to control surface runoff and prevent flooding. However, in many Nigerian cities, poor waste management practices have compromised the efficiency of these systems. Plastic waste accounts for a large proportion of solid waste generated in urban areas, and its improper disposal often leads to drainage blockage. When drainage channels are obstructed, stormwater cannot flow freely, causing localized flooding that disrupts economic activities and endangers lives (Ogunbiyi & Afolabi, 2021).
Abeokuta, being a rapidly growing urban center, experiences increased waste generation due to population growth, commercial expansion, and changing lifestyles. The cityβs waste management system struggles to keep up with this growth, resulting in the accumulation of plastic waste along roadsides and drainage channels. During heavy rainfall, these plastics are washed into culverts and rivers, reducing the hydraulic capacity of drains. Consequently, flooding incidents have become more frequent, particularly in areas such as Kuto, Lafenwa, and Panseke.
Despite efforts by the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) to manage waste, many residents still dispose of plastics indiscriminately. Understanding the extent of plastic waste pollution and its effect on drainage efficiency is therefore essential for sustainable urban planning and environmental management.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Abeokuta, urban flooding has become a recurrent problem that affects transportation, property, and public health. The major cause of this problem is the obstruction of drainage channels by improperly disposed plastic waste. Although several awareness campaigns have been launched, the issue persists due to poor waste collection systems, inadequate environmental enforcement, and limited recycling initiatives.
Many studies have examined waste management in Nigeria, but few have focused specifically on the relationship between plastic waste and urban drainage systems in Abeokuta. Without accurate data and proper analysis, policy interventions remain weak and ineffective. Therefore, this study seeks to fill this gap by assessing the magnitude of plastic waste pollution and its impact on drainage performance within the city.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The main aim of this research is to assess the impact of plastic waste pollution on urban drainage systems in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The specific objectives are to:

1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it provides insight into how plastic waste affects urban drainage systems and contributes to flooding in Abeokuta. The findings will assist policymakers, environmental agencies, and urban planners in designing strategies for effective waste management and flood control.
By identifying the main sources of drainage obstruction, the research will also help improve environmental sanitation and enhance community awareness. Additionally, the study supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which focuses on making cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Academic institutions can also use this study as a reference for further research on urban waste management and environmental protection.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on selected parts of Abeokuta Metropolis, particularly areas prone to flooding such as Kuto, Lafenwa, Panseke, and Ibara. It examines plastic waste generation patterns, drainage conditions, and waste disposal practices. The research excludes industrial zones where waste is managed differently and focuses primarily on domestic and commercial waste sources.
