Influence of Leadership Style on Employee Performance in the Hospitality Industry.
CHAPTER ONE
1.0 Introduction
Leadership plays a pivotal role in shaping organizational culture, guiding employees, and achieving business objectives. In the hospitality industry, where service quality directly affects customer satisfaction and business success, effective leadership is critical. Different leadership styles—transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire—can significantly influence employee motivation, engagement, and overall performance (Northouse, 2019).
Understanding the relationship between leadership style and employee performance helps hospitality managers implement strategies that boost productivity, improve service delivery, and enhance staff retention.
1.1 Background of the Study
Leadership style refers to the manner in which leaders direct, motivate, and manage employees to achieve organizational goals (Yukl, 2013). In the hospitality industry, employees are expected to interact with diverse customers, adapt to dynamic work environments, and maintain high service standards. Therefore, leadership is not only about issuing directives but also about inspiring, supporting, and guiding employees.
Transformational leadership, characterized by inspiration, vision, and mentorship, can foster creativity, commitment, and job satisfaction among hospitality staff. Conversely, transactional leadership emphasizes structure, supervision, and rewards or punishments, which can promote compliance but may limit creativity (Bass & Riggio, 2006). Laissez-faire leadership, on the other hand, gives employees autonomy but may lead to confusion or lack of direction if overused.
In Nigeria, the hospitality sector faces challenges such as high staff turnover, low motivation, and inconsistent service quality. These challenges are often linked to leadership practices. Hotels, resorts, and restaurants that employ effective leadership styles tend to maintain higher staff morale, efficiency, and customer satisfaction (Oluwole & Olatunji, 2020).
Examining the influence of leadership style on employee performance in this context is crucial. It allows organizations to identify leadership behaviors that enhance staff productivity, foster loyalty, and ensure sustainable service excellence. By understanding these dynamics, managers can develop training programs, policies, and strategies that align leadership approaches with organizational goals.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many hospitality organizations in Nigeria face low employee performance, which negatively affects service quality and customer satisfaction. Poor leadership practices, including lack of guidance, inconsistent supervision, and minimal employee engagement, contribute to these performance issues.
Although leadership is recognized as a key driver of organizational success, some managers in the hospitality sector still rely on rigid or inappropriate leadership styles that fail to motivate staff or enhance productivity. This creates a need to investigate how different leadership styles influence employee performance in hospitality organizations.
