Influence of Social Media Usage on Body Image Satisfaction Among Young Adults
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background of the Study
In recent years, social media has become an essential part of modern life, especially among young adults. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook allow individuals to share photos, connect with friends, and express their identities. However, as social media use increases, concerns have also grown about its influence on mental health and self-perception. Many young people spend several hours daily viewing, posting, and comparing images, which often shapes how they perceive their physical appearance and self-worth. Consequently, social media use has become a powerful factor influencing body image satisfaction (Perloff, 2014).
Body image refers to how individuals think and feel about their physical appearance. For young adults, body image plays a major role in building self-esteem and personal identity. Unfortunately, social media platforms often promote unrealistic beauty standards through heavily edited photos, filters, and influencer content. When users are exposed to these idealized images repeatedly, they may begin to compare themselves unfavorably, leading to dissatisfaction and low self-esteem. Studies have shown that excessive exposure to idealized online content can increase feelings of inadequacy and promote negative self-evaluation (Fardouly & Vartanian, 2016).
Furthermore, many young adults rely on likes, comments, and followers as indicators of social approval. As a result, they often experience pressure to look attractive or to conform to certain beauty norms. This constant comparison and need for validation can affect emotional well-being and contribute to body dissatisfaction. For example, individuals who perceive themselves as less attractive may experience anxiety or depression after engaging with idealized images online. Hence, social media can both connect and psychologically affect users depending on how it is used (Tiggemann & Slater, 2013).
On the other hand, social media can also have positive effects. Some online communities promote body positivity, self-acceptance, and diversity in beauty standards. These communities encourage users to embrace their natural appearance and reject unrealistic ideals. Nevertheless, the negative influences of social media on body image remain more prevalent, especially when users engage with appearance-focused content. Therefore, understanding how social media usage affects body image satisfaction is crucial in addressing the growing mental health concerns among young adults.
Moreover, the relationship between social media and body image is influenced by gender and personality differences. Young women, for example, are more likely to experience body dissatisfaction after comparing themselves to images of idealized female bodies. However, recent studies indicate that young men are increasingly affected as well, especially concerning muscularity and fitness ideals. As a result, both genders are becoming more vulnerable to image-related stress. Therefore, it is important to explore how the frequency, type, and purpose of social media use influence body image satisfaction among young adults (Holland & Tiggemann, 2017).
This study seeks to investigate the relationship between social media usage and body image satisfaction among young adults. By examining how exposure to digital content shapes perceptions of self, the study aims to provide insights that can help reduce negative effects and promote healthy social media habits.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Social media has transformed how young adults view themselves and others. However, the widespread exposure to idealized and edited images has created a culture of comparison and self-criticism. Many young adults feel dissatisfied with their appearance, which often leads to emotional distress and low self-esteem. Although previous research has explored this issue, there is still limited understanding of how different patterns of social media use—such as posting, browsing, or engaging with influencers—affect body image satisfaction. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the influence of social media usage on body image satisfaction among young adults.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess how social media usage influences body image satisfaction among young adults.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Examine the relationship between the frequency of social media use and body image satisfaction.
-
Identify the types of social media content that influence body image perception.
-
Explore the role of social comparison in shaping body image among young adults.
-
Suggest strategies for promoting positive body image through responsible social media engagement.

-
What strategies can help promote positive body image through social media?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it highlights how social media can shape self-perception and emotional well-being. The findings will help educators, counselors, and parents understand how excessive social media use contributes to body dissatisfaction. It will also provide practical recommendations for promoting digital literacy and self-acceptance among young adults.
Additionally, the study will serve as a reference for future researchers interested in social media psychology and self-concept development. Social media platforms can also use the findings to create policies that encourage realistic and diverse representations of beauty. Ultimately, the study aims to support healthier social media behaviors that enhance confidence and mental wellness among young people.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on young adults aged 18 to 30 years who actively use social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. It examines how the frequency and type of social media use influence body image satisfaction. The study does not focus on clinical eating disorders or psychological conditions; instead, it emphasizes general self-perception and satisfaction with appearance.
