Media Ethics and Professionalism in Journalism
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Journalism plays a central role in shaping public opinion and promoting accountability. However, ethical principles and professionalism determine the credibility of the media industry. Ethical journalism ensures that news is accurate, fair, and free from bias (Folarin, 2021).
Over the years, cases of sensational reporting, misinformation, and political manipulation have raised concerns about media credibility. According to Eze (2022), some journalists prioritize profit or personal interests over professional standards. This behavior damages public trust and weakens the role of the press as a watchdog.
With the rise of digital platforms, ethical challenges have increased. The pressure to publish quickly sometimes leads to errors or unverified reports. Despite these challenges, maintaining professionalism is essential for sustaining the integrity of journalism and protecting the publicβs right to truthful information.
This study examines the importance of media ethics and professionalism in journalism practice. It also explores how adherence to ethical standards affects the quality of news reporting and audience trust.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many journalists today face ethical dilemmas in their work. Competition for attention often leads to sensationalism, invasion of privacy, or biased reporting. Weak enforcement of media laws and lack of professional training make the situation worse.
