Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Climate change is one of the most urgent global challenges of the twenty-first century. The media play a central role in shaping how people understand and respond to it. Through framing, journalists highlight specific aspects of climate stories, influencing public perception and awareness (Akinyemi, 2021).
Framing refers to how the media select and emphasize certain facts, causes, or solutions in their coverage. For instance, a story may frame climate change as a scientific issue, a political debate, or a human rights concern. Each frame guides how audiences interpret the problem. According to Nwachukwu (2022), consistent framing affects how individuals prioritize environmental action.
Media coverage of climate change often determines whether the public views it as a distant threat or an immediate crisis. When journalists simplify scientific data and link it to local experiences, audiences are more likely to understand its relevance. However, when media outlets focus only on controversies or foreign events, they create emotional distance. As a result, awareness and behavior change remain low.
This study explores how the media frame climate change issues and how such framing influences public awareness. It seeks to understand whether the media promote understanding or confusion through their reporting patterns.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although climate change is widely discussed, public understanding remains uneven. Many people still doubt its causes or urgency. Some of this confusion stems from inconsistent media framing. Inadequate context, technical jargon, or political bias can distort the message. The study, therefore, investigates how media framing shapes awareness and perception of climate change.

The main objective is to assess how media framing of climate change affects public awareness. The specific objectives are:

1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on selected national newspapers, television, and online news outlets. It examines their coverage of climate change over a defined period and analyzes audience responses to those reports.
1.7 Definition of Terms
Framing: The process by which media emphasize certain aspects of an issue while downplaying others.
Climate Change: Long-term alterations in weather patterns caused by human or natural factors.
Public Awareness: The level of understanding and concern people have about a specific issue.
1.8 Organization of the Project
The project is divided into five chapters. Chapter One presents the introduction and research framework. Reviews ofย related literature is presented in chapter two. Chapter Three explains the methodology. Chapter Four analyzes the data and discusses the findings while Chapter Five concludes with recommendations.
