CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
Protein deficiency in livestock feeds is a major challenge facing smallholder farmers in developing countries. Feed ingredients such as soybean meal and groundnut cake are often expensive and scarce, limiting animal productivity. Moringa oleifera, a multipurpose tropical plant, has gained attention as a potential alternative protein source for livestock due to its high nutrient content and adaptability (Makkar and Becker, 1997).
The leaves of Moringa are rich in crude protein, essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals that can enhance animal performance (Fadiyimu et al., 2010). Studies have shown that Moringa leaf meal can improve growth rate, feed intake, and overall health in ruminants (Sarwatt et al., 2002). However, there is limited information on its optimal inclusion level and nutritional impact when used as a supplement in goat diets. This study therefore aims to evaluate the nutritional value of Moringa oleifera leaf meal as a protein supplement for goats.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many goat farmers depend on poor-quality forages that fail to meet the protein requirements for growth and reproduction. The rising cost of commercial protein supplements further limits productivity. There is insufficient research on the use of locally available and cost-effective protein sources like Moringa oleifera leaves in goat feeding (Abd El-Rahman et al., 2019).
1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.5 Significance of the Study
The study will provide practical solutions for reducing feed costs and improving livestock productivity using locally available resources. It will also contribute to sustainable livestock feeding systems and enhance food security in rural communities.
1.6 Scope and Limitation of the Study
The study will focus on weaned goats managed under semi-intensive conditions. Only growth and feed utilization parameters will be measured, excluding reproductive and blood biochemical traits.
