Political Godfatherism and Democratic Governance in Nigeria (1999–2023)
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Democratic governance depends on transparency, fairness, and the active participation of citizens in leadership selection. However, in Nigeria, political godfatherism has become a major obstacle to these ideals. Godfatherism refers to the influence of powerful individuals who use their wealth, connections, and authority to determine who holds political office. This practice has shaped Nigeria’s political system since the return to democracy in 1999.
Political godfathers often present themselves as mentors or sponsors of candidates. In reality, they use their influence to control elected officials and dominate party structures. According to Omotola (2010), godfatherism undermines accountability because political officeholders tend to serve their sponsors rather than the citizens. As a result, governance becomes centered on personal loyalty instead of public interest.
Historically, the roots of godfatherism in Nigeria can be traced to the patron-client system inherited from colonial administration and strengthened by military rule. After 1999, democracy offered opportunities for political participation. However, the dominance of wealthy elites in politics quickly gave rise to a system where godfathers decided who gained access to political power. This trend is visible across political parties and regions.
Moreover, godfatherism often leads to electoral violence, corruption, and poor governance. When godsons fail to meet their sponsors’ expectations, conflicts emerge that destabilize political systems. Several states, including Anambra, Oyo, and Kwara, have experienced violent political crises linked to godfather interference. Therefore, understanding the effects of godfatherism is crucial for assessing Nigeria’s democratic growth.
Political godfatherism does not only weaken governance; it also limits merit-based leadership and discourages citizen participation. Over time, it creates a cycle of political dependency where power revolves around a few elites. Consequently, democratic consolidation becomes difficult because elections lose their competitive and transparent nature.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite Nigeria’s progress in democratic governance since 1999, the influence of political godfathers remains widespread. Many politicians depend on wealthy sponsors for campaign funding and political endorsement. In return, they compromise their independence once in office. This relationship often results in corruption, weak institutions, and policy failure.
Furthermore, godfatherism discourages qualified individuals from contesting elections. The political process becomes exclusive, controlled by a few who manipulate outcomes for personal benefit. As a result, governance suffers because elected leaders focus more on satisfying their sponsors than on serving the electorate.
The persistence of godfatherism raises serious concerns about Nigeria’s political future. Therefore, this study examines how political godfatherism affects democratic governance in Nigeria between 1999 and 2023. It explores its causes, consequences, and possible solutions.

1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is important because it provides a deeper understanding of how political godfatherism undermines democratic governance. It will be useful to policymakers, civil society organizations, and political parties seeking ways to strengthen internal democracy and promote accountability.
Moreover, the study adds to existing literature on political behavior and democratic development in Nigeria. It helps researchers and students analyze the relationship between power, influence, and governance. The findings also highlight the need for political reforms that promote transparency, independent candidature, and civic education.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on political godfatherism and democratic governance in Nigeria from 1999 to 2023. It covers selected states where godfatherism has significantly influenced political processes, including Anambra, Lagos, Kwara, and Oyo. The research examines how godfather networks affect elections, policy decisions, and public administration.
The study relies on secondary data from books, journal articles, and media reports. Although the focus is on Nigeria, the analysis may apply to other African democracies struggling with elite dominance and weak political institutions.
