Preservation and Conservation of Print Materials in Public Libraries: A Case Study of Plateau State Public Library
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Libraries serve as custodians of knowledge. They provide access to information for education, research, and cultural preservation. Print materials such as books, journals, and newspapers form the backbone of library collections. However, these materials are prone to damage from environmental factors, handling, and ageing (Aina, 2019).
Preservation and conservation involve strategies to protect and extend the life of library materials. Preservation focuses on preventive measures, such as proper storage, humidity control, and handling practices. Conservation involves repair and restoration of damaged materials (Okoro, 2020). Together, these practices ensure that print materials remain accessible to current and future users.
The Plateau State Public Library maintains a collection of print resources that are essential for students, researchers, and the general public. Despite efforts to preserve materials, some books are torn, discoloured, or infested by pests. These challenges suggest that preservation and conservation practices may need improvement. Therefore, this study examines the strategies used and their effectiveness in maintaining print materials.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Print materials in public libraries often deteriorate over time. Factors such as poor handling, exposure to sunlight, humidity, and pests contribute to their decay. At the Plateau State Public Library, some books and journals are damaged or missing. Inadequate staff training and insufficient preservation equipment further aggravate the problem. As a result, users may not access important information when needed.
These challenges highlight the need to evaluate the preservation and conservation practices in public libraries. Understanding these issues will help improve the management of print resources and ensure their long-term availability.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine preservation and conservation practices for print materials in Plateau State Public Library.
The specific objectives are to
-
identify the preservation strategies used in the library
-
assess the effectiveness of these strategies in protecting print materials
-
examine the challenges faced by library staff in preservation and conservation
-
suggest measures to improve the preservation of print materials
1.4 Research Questions
This study seeks to answer the following questions
-
What preservation strategies are used in Plateau State Public Library
-
How effective are these strategies in maintaining print materials
-
What challenges do library staff face in preserving and conserving materials
-
What measures can improve preservation and conservation practices
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is important because it provides insight into how public libraries maintain their print collections. Library administrators can use the findings to improve preservation policies. Staff will benefit from recommendations on handling and conservation practices. Users will gain from better access to well-maintained materials. The study will also contribute to knowledge on library preservation practices in Nigeria.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on print materials in Plateau State Public Library. It examines preservation and conservation strategies, staff involvement, and challenges faced. The study does not cover digital resources or libraries outside Plateau State.
1.7 Definition of Key Terms
