Statistical Study of Tourism Growth in Calabar Metropolis (2010–2025)
Statistical Study of Tourism Growth in Calabar Metropolis (2010–2025)
Abstract
Tourism has become one of the fastest-growing sectors of the global economy and a vital contributor to the socioeconomic development of many nations. In Nigeria, Calabar stands out as one of the most prominent tourist destinations, attracting both domestic and international visitors due to its cultural heritage, natural beauty, and the annual Calabar Carnival. This study presents a statistical analysis of tourism growth in Calabar Metropolis between 2010 and 2025, with a focus on identifying patterns, trends, and factors influencing tourist inflow. Using descriptive statistics and regression analysis, the research examines data on visitor arrivals, hotel occupancy rates, tourism revenue, and government investment in infrastructure. The findings aim to reveal how statistical tools can effectively evaluate and predict tourism development, offering insights for policy formulation and sustainable planning.
Keywords: Tourism growth, Statistical analysis, Regression model, Calabar Metropolis, Trend analysis.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Tourism plays a pivotal role in promoting economic diversification and creating employment opportunities, especially in developing countries. In recent decades, it has emerged as a major driver of global economic progress, contributing significantly to GDP and foreign exchange earnings. In Nigeria, tourism has gradually evolved from a leisure activity into a strategic industry with the potential to boost national development.
Calabar, the capital city of Cross River State, is widely regarded as the “Tourism Hub of Nigeria.” The city attracts thousands of visitors annually through events such as the Calabar Carnival, the Obudu Mountain Race, and various cultural festivals. Additionally, its scenic landscapes, well-planned urban environment, and hospitable population make it a preferred destination for domestic and foreign tourists alike.
Over the years, the Cross River State Government has made several efforts to promote tourism through infrastructural development, such as improving road networks, upgrading hospitality facilities, and enhancing security. However, despite these initiatives, the pace of tourism growth remains inconsistent due to economic challenges, insecurity, and inadequate marketing. Therefore, a statistical study is needed to assess the trends, growth patterns, and determinants of tourism in Calabar from 2010 to 2025. Such analysis can provide a data-driven foundation for improving tourism policies and forecasting future growth.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Tourism in Calabar has received substantial government attention, yet its growth pattern remains uncertain. Despite heavy investments in infrastructure and promotion, fluctuations in tourist arrivals have been observed over the years. These inconsistencies may be linked to factors such as political instability, poor data management, economic downturns, or inadequate marketing strategies.
Many studies on tourism in Nigeria have focused primarily on cultural promotion and event management, with limited emphasis on quantitative analysis of growth trends. Consequently, there is insufficient empirical evidence to guide policymakers on how best to plan for sustainable tourism expansion. This study, therefore, addresses this gap by applying statistical methods to evaluate tourism growth, identify its determinants, and forecast future performance.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this research is to conduct a statistical analysis of tourism growth in Calabar Metropolis from 2010 to 2025.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Examine the trend of tourism growth in Calabar within the study period.
-
Identify factors influencing the inflow of tourists to Calabar.
-
Analyze the relationship between tourism investment and visitor arrivals.
-
Forecast future tourism growth using statistical modeling techniques.
-
Provide recommendations for enhancing sustainable tourism development in Calabar.
1.4 Research Questions
-
What are the trends in tourism growth in Calabar from 2010 to 2025?
-
What factors have influenced the inflow of tourists within the period under study?
-
How does government investment impact tourism performance in Calabar?
-
What are the future projections for tourism growth based on statistical modeling?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
-
H₀₁: There is no significant relationship between government investment and tourism growth in Calabar.
-
H₁₁: There is a significant relationship between government investment and tourism growth in Calabar.
-
H₀₂: The trend of tourism growth in Calabar between 2010 and 2025 is not statistically significant.
-
H₁₂: The trend of tourism growth in Calabar between 2010 and 2025 is statistically significant.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it provides a quantitative foundation for understanding tourism growth in Calabar. By using statistical methods such as time series and regression analysis, the research quantifies how various factors—like infrastructure, security, and government investment—affect tourist arrivals.
Furthermore, the study will help government agencies, policymakers, and tourism managers make data-driven decisions for sustainable tourism planning. It will also serve as a reference material for future researchers, particularly those in the fields of applied statistics, economics, and geography, who wish to analyze tourism development in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on Calabar Metropolis and covers the years 2010 to 2025. It examines data on tourist arrivals, tourism revenue, hotel occupancy rates, and related socioeconomic indicators. The statistical tools employed include descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression models. Other areas of tourism outside Cross River State are beyond the scope of this research.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The study faced several limitations, including incomplete tourism data due to poor record-keeping by some hospitality institutions. Time constraints also limited the extent of data collection and analysis. In addition, some government agencies were reluctant to release detailed financial information related to tourism expenditure. Despite these challenges, the data obtained were sufficient for a meaningful statistical analysis of tourism trends in Calabar.
