The Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Productivity in Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
Agriculture remains the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, providing employment and food security for millions of people (FAO, 2020). Despite this, the productivity level among farmers remains low due to inadequate access to modern agricultural knowledge and technologies. Agricultural extension services play a vital role in bridging the gap between research institutions and rural farmers by transferring improved farming techniques and innovations. These services enhance farmers’ knowledge, skills, and efficiency in production (Adewale, 2021).
In Nigeria, agricultural extension agents are expected to serve as a link between the government and farmers, helping them adopt new technologies and improve their yields. However, the effectiveness of these services varies across regions due to poor funding, limited manpower, and weak institutional frameworks (Oluwole, 2020). Enhancing extension services can significantly boost agricultural productivity and rural development. Therefore, assessing the effect of these services on farmers’ productivity will provide insights into how to strengthen agricultural policies and improve farmers’ livelihoods.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many farmers in Nigeria still depend on traditional farming methods that result in low yields. Extension services, though available, often fail to reach all farming communities due to inadequate personnel and logistical challenges. This situation hinders the dissemination of modern agricultural practices. Consequently, there is a persistent gap between potential and actual productivity levels among farmers (Nwosu, 2022). This study investigates the effectiveness of agricultural extension services in improving farmers’ productivity in Nigeria.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ productivity in Nigeria.
Specific objectives are to:
-
Examine the types of extension services available to farmers.
-
Determine the relationship between extension services and agricultural productivity.
-
Identify the challenges facing agricultural extension delivery in Nigeria.
-
Suggest ways to improve the effectiveness of extension services.
1.4 Research Questions
-
What types of agricultural extension services are available to farmers in Nigeria?
-
How do these services influence farmers’ productivity?
-
What challenges hinder the effectiveness of agricultural extension services?
-
What strategies can enhance agricultural extension delivery?
1.5 Significance of the Study
The findings will be beneficial to policymakers, researchers, and farmers. Policymakers can use the results to design efficient agricultural extension programs. Researchers will gain insight into factors affecting extension service delivery, while farmers can better understand how to use extension programs to improve yields.
