The Effect of Employee Motivation on Organizational Performance in Nigerian Manufacturing Firms
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background of the Study
Employee motivation is a key determinant of organizational performance. Motivation refers to the internal drive that stimulates individuals to achieve goals and perform effectively (Robbins & Judge, 2019). In manufacturing firms, motivated employees are more likely to maintain high productivity, reduce waste, and contribute to innovation.
In Nigeria, the manufacturing sector faces numerous challenges, including low productivity, poor employee engagement, and high staff turnover. Research shows that lack of motivation often leads to inefficiency, absenteeism, and poor quality of output (Armstrong, 2016). Motivational strategies, such as financial incentives, recognition programs, training opportunities, and career development, can enhance employees’ commitment and performance.
Despite the recognized importance of motivation, many Nigerian manufacturing firms struggle to implement effective motivational programs. Factors such as poor leadership, inadequate policies, and limited resources often hinder efforts to motivate staff. Understanding how different motivational techniques influence organizational performance can help firms improve efficiency, profitability, and competitiveness.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many manufacturing firms in Nigeria experience low productivity and operational inefficiencies. While employees may possess the required skills, a lack of motivation often reduces their willingness to perform optimally. The problem is compounded by poor remuneration, lack of recognition, and limited opportunities for career advancement. Consequently, firms struggle to meet production targets and maintain profitability. There is a need to investigate the link between employee motivation and organizational performance to identify strategies that can enhance productivity and efficiency.
