1.1 Background of the Study

Despite its importance, many communities around the world still face challenges related to poor sanitation. According to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF, 2022), over 3.6 billion people lack access to safe sanitation facilities. Poor sanitation contributes significantly to the spread of infectious diseases such as cholera, typhoid, diarrhea, and dysentery. It also leads to water contamination and environmental pollution.
In many developing communities, open defecation, inadequate waste disposal systems, and poor drainage facilities are still common. These practices contaminate water sources, attract disease vectors, and expose residents to numerous health risks. Children are particularly vulnerable, as poor sanitation contributes to high rates of diarrheal diseases and malnutrition (Adewumi & Hassan, 2021).
Community health is directly linked to environmental sanitation. When sanitation systems fail, the environment becomes a breeding ground for pathogens. Effective sanitation requires not only infrastructure but also public awareness and behavioral change. Educating communities about hygiene practices, proper waste disposal, and clean water usage is vital to improving health outcomes.
This study examines the effect of poor sanitation on community health. It explores how inadequate sanitation facilities and practices contribute to the spread of diseases and affect the overall well-being of residents.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite global and national efforts to improve sanitation, many communities still struggle with poor waste management and inadequate toilet facilities. Open defecation, clogged drainage systems, and poor refuse disposal continue to pose serious threats to public health.
Communities with poor sanitation experience frequent outbreaks of waterborne diseases. Children and the elderly are most affected due to weak immunity. Moreover, the lack of access to clean water worsens the problem by making hygiene practices difficult to maintain.
