The Effect of Reading Comprehension Strategies on Students’ Performance
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Reading comprehension is a fundamental skill in English language learning. It allows students to understand, interpret, and analyze written texts. Effective reading comprehension strategies, such as predicting, summarizing, questioning, and clarifying, improve students’ understanding and retention of content (Afflerbach et al., 2008).
Using comprehension strategies helps students engage actively with texts. Students learn to identify key ideas, make inferences, and evaluate information critically. Additionally, these strategies promote vocabulary development and improve overall academic performance. Research shows that students who apply reading comprehension strategies consistently achieve higher reading scores compared to those who rely on passive reading (National Reading Panel, 2000).
In Nigeria, students often face challenges with reading comprehension due to large class sizes, limited reading materials, and teaching methods that emphasize memorization. Therefore, investigating the effect of reading comprehension strategies on students’ performance can provide insights into methods that enhance learning outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many students struggle to understand English texts, which affects their academic performance. Teachers report difficulties in students’ ability to identify main ideas, make inferences, and analyze texts. Traditional teaching methods often do not equip students with effective strategies to improve comprehension. Furthermore, there is limited research on the effectiveness of reading comprehension strategies in Nigerian secondary schools. This study aims to examine how reading comprehension strategies influence students’ performance in English.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of reading comprehension strategies on students’ performance.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Identify the reading comprehension strategies commonly used in classrooms.
-
Assess how these strategies improve understanding, retention, and vocabulary.
-
Examine students’ attitudes toward using reading comprehension strategies.
-
Recommend strategies for effectively implementing comprehension techniques to enhance performance.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions:
-
What reading comprehension strategies are commonly used by students and teachers?
-
How do these strategies affect students’ understanding, retention, and vocabulary?
-
How do students perceive the usefulness of reading comprehension strategies?
-
What strategies can improve the implementation of reading comprehension techniques for better performance?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study benefits students, teachers, curriculum planners, and researchers. Students will understand how comprehension strategies can enhance understanding, retention, and performance. Teachers can incorporate effective strategies into lessons to improve reading skills. Curriculum planners may design programs that emphasize active reading and strategy instruction. Researchers will gain insights into methods for improving students’ reading comprehension and academic outcomes.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on secondary school students in Nigeria. It examines the effect of reading comprehension strategies on students’ performance, including understanding, retention, and vocabulary acquisition. The research does not cover primary schools, tertiary institutions, or other language skills such as speaking or writing. It is limited to classroom-based reading activities in English.
1.7 Operational Definition of Terms
Reading Comprehension Strategies: Techniques used by students to understand, interpret, and retain information from texts.
Performance: Students’ ability to answer questions, analyze texts, and demonstrate understanding of reading materials.
Retention: The ability to remember and apply information from texts.
Vocabulary: The range of words students understand and use effectively in reading and writing.
