The Effect of Social Media Platforms on Information Sharing Among Library Users in Federal University of Technology Owerri
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media has transformed how people access and share information. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Instagram allow users to communicate instantly. In academic settings, students and library users increasingly rely on these platforms to exchange information and collaborate on research projects (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2019).
Libraries can benefit from social media by promoting resources, sharing announcements, and engaging users. Users, in turn, can share information about library services, learning materials, and research updates. This interaction enhances knowledge dissemination and improves user participation (Ojedokun & Owolabi, 2020).
At the Federal University of Technology Owerri, library users have begun using social media to share study materials, ask questions, and discuss assignments. Despite the growth of this practice, there are concerns about accuracy, privacy, and proper citation. Therefore, it is important to examine how social media platforms affect information sharing among library users.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While social media enables quick sharing of information, it also introduces challenges. Users may share inaccurate or incomplete information. Some may rely solely on social media instead of verified library resources. In addition, privacy concerns and copyright issues arise when materials are shared without proper permission (Afolabi, 2020).
At the Federal University of Technology Owerri, some students report difficulties in finding reliable information online. Others misuse social media platforms for casual rather than academic purposes. These issues reduce the effectiveness of social media in supporting learning. Therefore, there is a need to assess its impact on information sharing among library users.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of social media platforms on information sharing among library users at the Federal University of Technology Owerri.
The specific objectives are to
-
identify the social media platforms used by library users
-
assess how these platforms facilitate information sharing
-
examine the challenges faced in sharing information via social media
-
determine the impact of social media on the quality of information shared
1.4 Research Questions
This study seeks to answer the following questions
-
Which social media platforms do library users use most frequently
-
How do these platforms facilitate information sharing
-
What challenges do users face when sharing information on social media
-
How does social media affect the quality of information shared
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study will help librarians understand how social media affects library usersβ information sharing habits. It will guide the development of social media policies and training programs. Administrators can use the findings to improve communication and promote reliable information.
Students and researchers will also benefit. They will learn how to share information responsibly and evaluate online content effectively. The study will also contribute to academic literature on the use of social media in libraries.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on library users in the Federal University of Technology Owerri. It examines the use of social media for information sharing, the platforms used, and the challenges faced. The study does not cover general social media use unrelated to library information.
1.7 Definition of Key Terms
