The Effect of Social Media Slang on Students’ Written English
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Language evolves constantly, and social media has accelerated this change. In Nigeria, students frequently use platforms such as WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, and X to communicate. On these platforms, slang and informal expressions have become common. Social media slang includes abbreviations, acronyms, emojis, and playful spelling, which often deviate from Standard English conventions (Tagg, 2015).
The widespread use of slang has both positive and negative effects. On one hand, it allows students to communicate quickly and creatively. On the other hand, repeated exposure to slang may affect mastery of formal written English. Students may transfer informal expressions into essays, assignments, and exams, leading to grammatical and lexical errors. Therefore, studying the effect of social media slang on written English is essential for understanding its influence on academic performance.
Furthermore, English proficiency is critical for academic success and career development. Teachers and educators have observed that students often struggle to separate informal online language from formal writing. Scholars argue that understanding this trend helps educators develop strategies to reinforce standard language use while acknowledging the role of digital communication (Crystal, 2011).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Students’ frequent use of social media slang has raised concerns about its impact on written English. Many students incorporate abbreviations, emojis, and non-standard spellings into formal tasks. Consequently, teachers observe errors in grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary. Despite these observations, there is limited research on how social media slang specifically influences students’ written English. This gap highlights the need for a systematic study to examine the relationship between slang use and academic writing.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of social media slang on students’ written English.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Identify common social media slang used by students in Nigeria.
-
Analyse how slang influences grammar, spelling, and sentence construction in formal writing.
-
Assess students’ awareness of the differences between informal and formal English.
-
Suggest strategies to improve mastery of written English while managing social media influence.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions:
-
What types of social media slang are commonly used by students?
-
How does the use of slang affect grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure in written English?
-
How aware are students of the differences between informal and formal English?
-
What strategies can be applied to minimize the negative impact of slang on written English?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study benefits students, teachers, curriculum planners, and researchers. Students will gain awareness of how slang affects their formal writing skills. Teachers can develop strategies to teach the differences between informal and formal English. Curriculum planners may incorporate guidelines to balance digital communication and academic writing. Researchers will gain insight into language evolution and its impact on education in the digital era.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on secondary school students in Nigeria. It examines the influence of social media slang on written English, particularly grammar, vocabulary, and sentence construction. The study does not include spoken communication, local dialects, or informal texts outside social media platforms.
