1.1 Background of the Study
The continuous growth of technology has changed how teachers deliver lessons and how students learn. In recent years, Virtual Reality (VR) has emerged as one of the most innovative educational tools. Virtual Reality refers to the use of computer-generated environments that allow users to interact with simulated objects or situations as if they were real (Johnson, 2021). In education, VR enables learners to explore complex concepts through immersive and interactive experiences that traditional classroom teaching cannot easily provide.
Science subjects often present abstract ideas that students find difficult to visualize. Topics such as atomic structure, cell biology, and the solar system may be challenging when taught only with textbooks or two-dimensional diagrams. Virtual Reality makes these concepts more concrete by allowing students to observe and manipulate digital models in a three-dimensional space. This approach not only enhances understanding but also increases curiosity and motivation to learn (Bailenson, 2020).
In many developed countries, VR is already used to teach physics, chemistry, and biology. For example, students can explore the human circulatory system or conduct simulated chemistry experiments without physical risks. These experiences make learning active and memorable. According to Santos and Costa (2022), students who learn through immersive environments tend to retain more knowledge because they engage multiple senses while learning.
In Nigeria, the use of Virtual Reality in classrooms is still emerging. Although awareness of digital learning tools is growing, many schools lack the infrastructure and resources required for implementation. However, with the increasing availability of smartphones and affordable VR headsets, educators are beginning to explore its potential. Science teachers now recognize that interactive tools can make students more engaged and help them retain knowledge better (Eze & Chukwuma, 2023).
Despite its potential, the actual effect of VR on students’ engagement and retention in science learning remains underexplored in many Nigerian schools. Understanding this effect is important because it provides insight into how technology can make science education more effective and enjoyable. Therefore, this study focuses on examining how Virtual Reality tools influence students’ engagement and retention in science learning.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many secondary school students in Nigeria find science subjects difficult and uninteresting. Traditional methods of teaching often rely heavily on lectures and textbook explanations, which limit students’ participation and curiosity. As a result, students struggle to understand abstract concepts and easily forget what they have learned.
Virtual Reality offers an innovative way to address this challenge by providing interactive and immersive learning experiences. However, only a few schools have adopted VR for science education, and its impact on students’ engagement and retention has not been fully assessed. There is therefore a need to investigate whether VR tools truly enhance learning outcomes in science classrooms.

1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is important because it highlights how technology can improve the quality of science education. The findings will help teachers understand how to use Virtual Reality to make science lessons more engaging and interactive. School administrators can also use the results to plan investments in modern teaching tools that improve students’ performance.
For policymakers, the study provides evidence that supports the integration of innovative technologies into school curricula. It will also encourage government and private institutions to provide training for teachers on the effective use of VR in the classroom. Additionally, the research will guide future studies on how immersive technologies can enhance learning across different subjects.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on selected secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. It examines how Virtual Reality tools are used to teach science subjects and how they influence students’ engagement and retention. The research limits its focus to science learning environments that make use of VR simulations, interactive 3D models, and virtual laboratories.
