The Impact of Artificial Intelligence Tutoring Systems on Students’ Academic Achievement
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background of the Study
The rapid advancement of technology has brought significant changes to education. One of the most remarkable innovations is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in teaching and learning. Artificial Intelligence tutoring systems are computer-based applications that use machine learning algorithms to simulate the role of a human tutor. These systems adapt to the individual learning pace, style, and needs of each student, providing personalized instruction and instant feedback (Luckin et al., 2019).
In recent years, AI has become an essential tool in educational technology. It enhances both teaching and learning by automating assessments, analyzing student performance, and offering customized learning paths. According to Holmes et al. (2021), AI tutoring systems help students grasp difficult concepts by breaking lessons into simpler parts and by providing hints, quizzes, and explanations tailored to their progress. These systems promote self-directed learning and encourage continuous improvement.
In traditional classrooms, teachers often face the challenge of meeting the diverse learning needs of students. Some learners grasp concepts quickly, while others require additional time and support. However, limited class time and large student populations make it difficult for teachers to offer personalized attention. AI tutoring systems address this issue by offering individualized learning experiences. They monitor student performance, identify weaknesses, and provide targeted assistance that strengthens understanding.
AI-driven tools such as Duolingo, Carnegie Learning, and Smart Sparrow have already demonstrated positive effects on learning outcomes in various countries. They improve engagement through interactive exercises and immediate feedback. In Nigeria, the growing interest in digital education has led to increased awareness of AI applications in schools. Some institutions have started integrating AI tutoring platforms to complement classroom instruction, particularly in mathematics, science, and language learning (Ogunlade & Adebayo, 2023).
Despite these developments, the adoption of AI tutoring systems in Nigeria remains limited. Challenges such as poor internet connectivity, inadequate funding, and a lack of technical expertise affect their implementation. Furthermore, some educators are skeptical about relying on technology for personalized teaching, fearing that it might reduce human interaction in the learning process. These concerns raise the need to assess how AI tutoring systems impact students’ academic achievement, especially in developing educational contexts.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While AI tutoring systems have shown potential to improve learning outcomes globally, their impact in Nigerian schools is not well understood. Many students continue to struggle with poor academic performance, especially in science and mathematics subjects. Traditional teaching methods may not fully cater to the individual needs of students, leading to uneven progress and low motivation.
Although AI tutoring systems can provide personalized support, their effectiveness depends on several factors such as accessibility, teacher readiness, and student adaptability. There is also limited research on how these systems influence students’ academic achievement in local educational settings. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the impact of AI tutoring systems on students’ academic achievement, focusing on how they improve learning outcomes and engagement.

1.5 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into how Artificial Intelligence can enhance educational outcomes. For teachers, it will show how AI tutoring systems can complement classroom teaching and support students who require extra help. School administrators will gain an understanding of how to integrate AI tools effectively to improve academic performance.
Policymakers will also benefit from the findings by identifying areas that require investment, such as infrastructure development and teacher training. For students, AI tutoring systems can foster independent learning, build confidence, and improve academic achievement. Finally, the study will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on educational technology and its role in transforming learning in Nigeria.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on selected secondary schools in Lagos State that have adopted or plan to adopt AI tutoring systems to enhance learning. It examines their effects on students’ academic performance in core subjects such as mathematics, English, and science. The study does not include tertiary institutions or non-academic uses of AI.
