The Impact of English Language Podcasts on Listening Skills of Students
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Listening is a key component of English language learning. Podcasts, which are audio programs available online, have become a popular tool for improving listening skills. They provide authentic language input, expose learners to different accents, and introduce real-life topics that enhance comprehension (Cobb, 2007).
English language podcasts allow students to practice listening anytime and anywhere. They encourage active engagement, note-taking, and repetition, which help learners internalize vocabulary, pronunciation, and sentence structures. Moreover, podcasts promote critical listening skills as students analyze ideas, tone, and context. Research shows that students who regularly listen to podcasts demonstrate significant improvement in listening comprehension and overall language proficiency (Vanderplank, 2010).
In Nigeria, English listening skills are often weak among secondary school students. Traditional teaching methods may not provide sufficient exposure to authentic language use. Therefore, examining the impact of podcasts on listening skills can guide teachers in integrating technology to enhance English language learning.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of podcasts, many students still struggle with listening comprehension. Teachers report difficulties in understanding spoken English, recognizing vocabulary, and following lectures. Some students may not access or engage with podcasts effectively. Additionally, there is limited research on how podcasts specifically influence listening skills in Nigerian schools. This study aims to investigate the effect of English language podcasts on students’ listening proficiency.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of English language podcasts on students’ listening skills.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Identify the types of podcasts commonly used by students for learning English.
-
Assess how podcast listening improves students’ vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension.
-
Examine students’ engagement and frequency of podcast use.
-
Recommend strategies for effectively integrating podcasts into English lessons.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions:
-
What types of podcasts are commonly used by students for English learning?
-
How does listening to podcasts affect students’ vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension?
-
How often do students listen to podcasts, and how engaged are they?
-
What strategies can enhance the use of podcasts to improve listening skills?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study benefits students, teachers, curriculum planners, and researchers. Students will understand how podcasts can enhance listening skills and overall language proficiency. Teachers can incorporate podcasts into lessons to create a more interactive and engaging learning environment. Curriculum planners may design programs that integrate audio-based learning tools. Researchers will gain insights into innovative strategies for improving English listening skills in classrooms.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on secondary school students in Nigeria. It examines the impact of English language podcasts on listening skills, including vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension. The research does not cover primary schools, tertiary institutions, or other language skills such as writing or speaking. It is limited to classroom-based and self-directed podcast use.
