CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Technology has transformed education worldwide. Mobile learning, also called m-learning, allows students to access learning materials through smartphones, tablets, and other portable devices. In Nigeria, mobile learning is gaining popularity, especially in teaching the English language. Through mobile applications, online exercises, and educational games, students can practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English anytime and anywhere (Traxler, 2009).
Mobile learning provides flexibility and individualized instruction. Students can learn at their own pace, repeat lessons when necessary, and engage with interactive content. Moreover, mobile tools enhance motivation and participation. When used effectively, they can improve students’ vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and overall communication skills (Kukulska-Hulme, 2013).
Despite the benefits, some challenges exist. Limited access to devices, internet connectivity issues, and lack of guidance may reduce the effectiveness of mobile learning. Consequently, it is crucial to examine how mobile learning affects English language acquisition, as this understanding can guide teachers and policymakers in integrating technology into classrooms effectively.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although mobile learning has expanded rapidly, many students still struggle with English language acquisition. Teachers often report poor vocabulary, weak writing skills, and low listening comprehension. Additionally, some students may misuse mobile learning apps or focus more on entertainment than learning. Limited research exists on how mobile learning specifically impacts students’ English proficiency in Nigeria. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of mobile learning on students’ English language acquisition.

1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on secondary school students in Nigeria. It examines the use of mobile learning tools for improving vocabulary, grammar, writing, listening, and speaking in English. The study does not cover primary schools, tertiary institutions, or non-English subjects. It also excludes offline learning methods not involving mobile devices.
1.7 Operational Definition of Terms
Mobile Learning: Learning that takes place through smartphones, tablets, or portable devices.
English Language Acquisition: The process by which students learn and develop proficiency in English.
