The Impact of Youth Participation in Agriculture on Rural Employment and Economic Growth in Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
Agriculture remains a vital pillar of Nigeria’s economy. It provides food, raw materials, and employment for a large portion of the population. Despite its importance, the sector faces persistent challenges, including low productivity, poor infrastructure, and an aging farming population. As older farmers retire, youth participation in agriculture becomes increasingly necessary for sustaining food production and economic growth (FAO, 2021).
Over the years, many young people in Nigeria have avoided agriculture due to perceptions of it being unprofitable and labor-intensive. The attraction of urban life, coupled with limited access to land, credit, and modern tools, has also discouraged rural youth from engaging in farming (Ogunlela, 2020). However, with unemployment on the rise, there is a renewed interest in agriculture as a source of income and self-employment.
Youth involvement in agriculture can drive innovation, improve productivity, and stimulate rural economic development. Young farmers tend to adopt modern technologies faster, which enhances efficiency and profitability. When properly supported, youth participation creates jobs along the agricultural value chain — from production to processing and marketing. Consequently, this contributes to rural development and national economic growth (Nwosu & Ajayi, 2022).
The Nigerian government and development partners have launched several programs to encourage youth in agriculture. Initiatives such as the Youth Empowerment in Agriculture Programme (YEAP) and N-Power Agro aim to train and finance young farmers. Nevertheless, the impact of these programs on rural employment and economic growth has not been fully documented. Hence, this study investigates how youth participation influences rural employment creation and the overall economic performance of Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Youth unemployment remains a major socioeconomic challenge in Nigeria. Many young people migrate to cities seeking better opportunities, leaving rural areas underpopulated and unproductive. Although agriculture has the potential to absorb a large labor force, the level of youth involvement remains low.
Several programs designed to attract young people to agriculture have recorded mixed results. Some beneficiaries lack follow-up support, while others struggle with inadequate access to inputs and markets. As a result, the sector still faces labor shortages, particularly in rural communities. The limited empirical evidence on how youth participation translates into job creation and economic growth further complicates policy planning.
Therefore, this study seeks to assess the impact of youth participation in agriculture on rural employment and economic growth in Nigeria.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of youth participation in agriculture on rural employment and economic growth in Nigeria. The specific objectives are to:
-
Examine the level of youth participation in agricultural activities in rural Nigeria.
-
Assess the effect of youth involvement on rural employment generation.
-
Determine the relationship between youth participation in agriculture and national economic growth.
-
Identify the challenges faced by youths in participating in agricultural ventures.
-
Recommend strategies for enhancing youth engagement in agriculture.
1.4 Research Questions
-
What is the level of youth participation in agriculture in rural areas?
-
How does youth involvement influence rural employment creation?
-
What relationship exists between youth participation and economic growth in Nigeria?
-
What are the major challenges hindering youth engagement in agriculture?
-
What strategies can encourage more youths to participate in agriculture?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
-
H₀₁: Youth participation in agriculture has no significant effect on rural employment in Nigeria.
-
H₀₂: Youth participation in agriculture has no significant relationship with economic growth in Nigeria.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it provides empirical evidence on the contribution of youth to agricultural development and economic growth. It will help policymakers understand the potential of youth-driven agriculture in addressing unemployment and promoting rural development.
In addition, the findings will guide government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private investors in designing effective youth empowerment programs. It will also benefit young people by highlighting opportunities available within the agricultural sector. Academically, the research adds to existing literature on employment and agricultural economics in developing countries.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on youth aged between 18 and 35 years who are engaged in various agricultural activities across selected rural areas in Nigeria. It covers crop production, livestock farming, agro-processing, and agribusiness enterprises.
The research is limited by time, access to reliable data, and funding constraints. Despite these challenges, it provides valuable insights into the relationship between youth participation, employment creation, and economic growth.
