The Influence of Ethnic Politics on National Integration in Nigeria (1999–2023)
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Ethnic politics remains one of the most persistent challenges to national unity in Nigeria. The country is home to over 250 ethnic groups, each with its own language, culture, and political interests. This diversity, although rich, has often been manipulated by political elites for personal or regional advantage. Since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, ethnic divisions have continued to influence elections, appointments, and public policies.
Ethnicity in Nigerian politics did not begin with the current democratic era. It has deep historical roots dating back to colonial rule when regional divisions were institutionalized by the British. These divisions later shaped post-independence politics and remain visible in modern governance. According to Suberu (2019), Nigeria’s political system often reflects ethnic competition rather than national cooperation.
When politicians use ethnicity to gain power, national unity suffers. Instead of focusing on competence and ideology, political actors appeal to ethnic loyalty. This pattern fuels mistrust and weakens national integration. As a result, many Nigerians identify more with their ethnic group than with the nation as a whole.
Democracy thrives when citizens share a collective sense of belonging. However, in Nigeria, ethnic politics continues to shape voting behavior, party alliances, and policy priorities. Therefore, examining how ethnic politics affects national integration is essential to building a stronger democratic system.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Nigeria has remained politically fragile due to the continuous influence of ethnic politics. Although democracy is meant to promote inclusion and unity, ethnic rivalries have instead deepened divisions. Political leaders often use ethnicity as a tool to gain electoral advantage. Consequently, national interest is frequently sacrificed for ethnic or regional gain.
This situation limits political stability and weakens citizens’ trust in the state. Ethnic bias in public appointments, resource distribution, and party formation fuels resentment and marginalization. Despite decades of democracy, Nigeria still struggles to achieve genuine national integration. The persistence of ethnic politics raises a crucial question: Can Nigeria attain national unity when politics remains deeply rooted in ethnicity?
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of ethnic politics on national integration in Nigeria between 1999 and 2023.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Assess how ethnic politics affects political stability and unity.
-
Examine the role of political leaders in promoting or reducing ethnic divisions.
-
Identify the effects of ethnicity on governance and resource allocation.
-
Suggest strategies for promoting national integration in a multi-ethnic society.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions:
-
How does ethnic politics influence political stability and unity in Nigeria?
-
In what ways do political leaders promote or reduce ethnic divisions?
-
What are the effects of ethnic politics on governance and resource allocation?
-
What measures can promote national integration in Nigeria?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it contributes to the understanding of Nigeria’s political and social structure. It highlights how ethnic politics shapes governance, democracy, and unity. Policymakers and civil society organizations can use the findings to design initiatives that promote tolerance and national identity.
Students and researchers in political science will benefit from this study as it provides empirical insights into how ethnic diversity can either strengthen or weaken a nation. Moreover, the research offers recommendations for creating policies that foster inclusion and reduce ethnic tensions in Nigeria.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the influence of ethnic politics on national integration in Nigeria between 1999 and 2023. It examines the actions of political leaders, party structures, and electoral behavior within this period. The analysis also covers major political events and policy decisions that reflect ethnic interests. The study limits itself to the national level but references regional case studies where relevant.
