The Influence of Pidgin English on Students’ Mastery of Standard English
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Language plays a critical role in education. In Nigeria, Standard English is the language of instruction in schools. It is also the medium for formal communication in examinations, government, and professional settings. However, many students speak Pidgin English at home and in informal settings. Consequently, this widespread use of Pidgin English may influence their mastery of Standard English. Scholars argue that frequent use of non-standard varieties can shape students’ grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills (Afolayan, 2017).
Pidgin English serves as a bridge among people from diverse linguistic backgrounds. It is simple, informal, and easy to understand. Therefore, many students rely on it for daily communication. However, when students transfer expressions, vocabulary, or syntax from Pidgin English into academic tasks, errors may occur. Furthermore, teachers report that students often struggle with sentence structure and correct grammar, which may be linked to their exposure to Pidgin English (Oyetade, 2015).
On the other hand, Pidgin English also has some advantages. It enhances fluency and confidence in oral communication. It can help students understand concepts quickly, especially in multilingual classrooms. Despite these benefits, there remains a concern that excessive dependence on Pidgin English may hinder the development of formal language skills. Therefore, it is important to examine how Pidgin English affects students’ mastery of Standard English in schools.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many students in Nigerian schools exhibit challenges in grammar, vocabulary, and formal writing. Teachers often notice that expressions from Pidgin English appear in essays, assignments, and examinations. While Pidgin English facilitates communication in informal contexts, its influence on academic English remains a concern. This situation creates a gap between students’ oral fluency in Pidgin and their ability to use Standard English effectively. Consequently, there is a need for systematic study to determine the extent of this influence.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of Pidgin English on students’ mastery of Standard English.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Identify common Pidgin English expressions used by students in academic tasks.
-
Assess how these expressions affect grammar, vocabulary, and sentence construction.
-
Determine students’ attitudes toward the use of Pidgin English and Standard English.
-
Suggest strategies to improve mastery of Standard English without undermining Pidgin English use.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions:
-
What Pidgin English expressions are commonly used by students in schools?
-
How do these expressions influence students’ grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure?
-
What attitudes do students have toward Pidgin English and Standard English?
-
What measures can be applied to improve mastery of Standard English?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study benefits teachers, students, curriculum planners, and researchers. Teachers will understand the influence of Pidgin English on formal language learning and develop strategies to improve instruction. Students will gain awareness of how informal language affects academic performance. Curriculum planners can use the findings to design materials that strengthen Standard English skills. Researchers will also benefit from additional insight into language transfer and educational outcomes.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on secondary school students in Nigeria. It examines the influence of Pidgin English on their mastery of Standard English, particularly in writing and oral communication. The study does not cover higher education students or other regional dialects beyond Pidgin English.
1.7 Operational Definition of Terms
Pidgin English: A simplified, informal variety of English commonly used in Nigeria for communication among speakers of different languages.
Standard English: The formal version of English used in education, professional settings, and official communication.
Mastery: The ability to use language correctly and effectively.
Language Transfer: The influence of one language variety on the use of another.
