The Influence of Social Media on Library Service Delivery in Tertiary Institutions
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media has transformed communication, learning, and information sharing in modern society. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp have become tools for academic engagement, collaboration, and information dissemination (Aina, 2019). In tertiary institutions, libraries have begun leveraging social media to enhance service delivery, promote resources, and engage students.
Library use of social media allows institutions to reach a wider audience. Announcements about new resources, events, and workshops can be shared instantly. Social media also facilitates interaction between librarians and students, enabling quick responses to queries, resource recommendations, and online support (Fawole, 2020). Through these platforms, libraries can create a more visible and accessible presence, improving the student experience.
Social media can also support information literacy by providing tutorials, tips, and links to resources. Students can follow library pages or groups to receive updates on database access, e-book availability, and research guides. Research indicates that integrating social media into library services can increase engagement, awareness of resources, and user satisfaction (Ajiboye & Olojede, 2018).
Despite the advantages, challenges exist in the use of social media for library service delivery. Issues such as limited technical skills, inappropriate content, privacy concerns, and inconsistent engagement can hinder effectiveness. Understanding how social media influences library service delivery helps institutions maximize benefits, address challenges, and improve overall academic support.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although libraries in tertiary institutions use social media platforms to provide services, many students are unaware of these initiatives or fail to engage actively. Some students prefer traditional library services and may not follow social media pages or groups. Additionally, privacy concerns and distractions associated with social media may limit its effectiveness as a service delivery tool (Nwalo, 2020).
Library staff may face challenges managing multiple platforms, ensuring content relevance, and maintaining consistent engagement. Limited technical skills and inadequate institutional policies can also affect the quality and reliability of social media communication. This study seeks to assess the influence of social media on library service delivery in tertiary institutions and identify strategies for improvement.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of social media on library service delivery in tertiary institutions.
The specific objectives are to
-
identify social media platforms used by libraries for service delivery
-
assess the impact of social media on students’ awareness and use of library resources
-
examine challenges affecting the use of social media in library services
-
suggest strategies to enhance the effectiveness of social media in library service delivery
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions
-
What social media platforms are used by libraries for service delivery in tertiary institutions
-
How does social media influence students’ awareness and use of library resources
-
What challenges affect the use of social media in library services
-
What strategies can enhance the effectiveness of social media in library service delivery
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for students, librarians, and university administrators. For students, understanding how social media is used in libraries provides easier access to information, resources, and academic support. Students can engage more actively with library services and benefit from timely updates, tutorials, and guidance.
For librarians, the study highlights the effectiveness of social media in reaching students, increasing engagement, and promoting resources. Librarians can identify best practices, develop relevant content, and improve online interaction with users.
University administrators will benefit by recognizing the value of social media in library service delivery. Investments in staff training, platform management, and digital communication strategies can enhance library visibility, student satisfaction, and academic support. The study also contributes to academic literature on digital communication and library services in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the use of social media by libraries in selected Nigerian tertiary institutions. It examines the platforms used, their influence on service delivery, challenges faced, and strategies for improvement. The study targets undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as library staff involved in social media management. Other educational institutions and non-academic libraries are excluded. Both content dissemination and interactive engagement features of social media are included, while personal social media use unrelated to library services is not considered.
