The Role of Agricultural Extension Services in Enhancing Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Technologies in Nigeria

1.1 Background to the Study
Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors of Nigeria’s economy. It provides food, employment, and raw materials for industries. Despite its importance, agricultural productivity in Nigeria is still below its potential. This is mainly because many farmers continue to use traditional methods of production that yield low output.
Agricultural extension services were introduced to bridge this gap. They serve as a link between research institutions and farmers. Extension officers help farmers understand and apply improved technologies that can increase efficiency and yield (Adebayo, 2012). These technologies include the use of hybrid seeds, organic and inorganic fertilizers, mechanized tools, irrigation, and modern pest control practices.
However, many smallholder farmers in Nigeria still lack access to adequate extension support. In several rural communities, there are too few extension agents to meet farmers’ needs. As a result, adoption rates for improved technologies remain low. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO, 2020), effective agricultural extension systems are key to achieving food security and rural development.
Moreover, Nigeria’s agricultural policies have often recognized the importance of extension services. Programs such as the Agricultural Development Projects (ADPs) and the National Fadama Project were designed to improve farmer education and support. Yet, despite these efforts, the performance of extension systems remains weak. Poor funding, limited training, and weak coordination have reduced their impact (Ozor et al., 2011).
In today’s global economy, knowledge plays a major role in agricultural transformation. Therefore, strengthening extension systems can help farmers adopt modern technologies, reduce losses, and increase productivity. It can also support national efforts toward food security and poverty reduction.
This study seeks to examine the role of agricultural extension services in promoting farmers’ adoption of improved technologies in Nigeria. It aims to identify the key factors that influence adoption and assess how extension services can be made more effective.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Nigeria has one of the largest populations of smallholder farmers in Africa. However, most of them still rely on outdated farming practices. Many farmers lack access to modern tools, high-yield seeds, and scientific farming knowledge. These challenges contribute to low productivity and persistent food insecurity.
Although agricultural extension services are meant to solve these issues, their coverage and effectiveness have declined in recent years. In many areas, farmers receive little or no technical advice throughout the farming season. Consequently, they miss out on opportunities to improve their yields and income.
Limited mobility of extension officers, inadequate funding, and poor information dissemination have also reduced the system’s performance. Without strong and functional extension services, the adoption of improved technologies will remain slow. This study therefore aims to evaluate the role of extension services in helping farmers adopt and apply better agricultural technologies.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the role of agricultural extension services in enhancing farmers’ adoption of improved technologies in Nigeria. The specific objectives are to:

Examine the level of farmers’ access to agricultural extension services in the study area.

Determine the types of improved technologies promoted through extension activities.

Assess the extent to which extension services influence technology adoption among farmers.

Identify the challenges limiting effective extension service delivery.
1.4 Research Questions

1.5 Research Hypotheses

H₀₁: Agricultural extension services have no significant effect on farmers’ adoption of improved technologies in Nigeria.

H₀₂: There is no significant relationship between farmers’ access to extension services and their productivity levels.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several reasons. First, it contributes to the understanding of how extension systems affect technology adoption among Nigerian farmers. Policymakers can use the findings to improve extension training and allocate resources more efficiently.
Second, development agencies and NGOs can benefit from the results by designing targeted interventions that promote technology dissemination. Finally, the study will help extension officers and researchers identify practical ways to strengthen farmer–extension relationships.
By highlighting these issues, the study supports ongoing efforts to achieve sustainable agricultural growth and food security in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on selected rural communities where farming is the main source of income. It covers various types of improved technologies such as improved seed varieties, fertilizer use, and mechanization. However, limited access to data, poor record-keeping, and farmers’ unwillingness to share information may pose challenges.
Despite these limitations, the research aims to provide a realistic assessment of extension service effectiveness and its impact on technology adoption.
