The Role of Educational Technology in Promoting Inclusive Education for Learners with Disabilities
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background of the Study
Inclusive education aims to provide equal learning opportunities for all students, regardless of their physical, sensory, intellectual, or emotional differences. It ensures that every learner, including those with disabilities, can learn in the same environment as their peers. Over the years, educational technology has emerged as a strong tool in promoting this vision by removing barriers that limit participation and learning. According to UNESCO (2022), inclusive education thrives when teachers use assistive technologies and digital tools that meet the diverse needs of all learners.
Educational technology refers to the use of digital tools, applications, and systems to support teaching and learning. These tools include screen readers, speech-to-text software, interactive whiteboards, digital learning platforms, and online resources. Such technologies make learning more flexible and accessible for students with disabilities. For example, learners with visual impairments can use screen readers to access digital textbooks, while those with hearing challenges can benefit from captioned videos and sign language apps.
In Nigeria, the adoption of educational technology has increased significantly, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools began integrating digital learning platforms and online teaching tools to ensure continuous education. This growth created new opportunities for learners with disabilities to participate more fully in the learning process. However, many schools still struggle with limited resources, inadequate teacher training, and poor infrastructure, which affect the effective use of technology in inclusive education (Oloyede & Ajayi, 2021).
Globally, studies have shown that when schools embrace educational technology, they create environments that encourage participation and independence among learners with disabilities. According to Al-Azawei et al. (2019), digital learning tools help reduce stigma by allowing students to learn at their own pace and in a way that suits their abilities. In addition, technology promotes collaboration between teachers and students through interactive and personalized learning experiences.
Despite these benefits, challenges still exist. Some schools lack access to assistive technologies due to high costs or poor internet connectivity. Teachers may also lack the necessary training to integrate technology effectively into lessons for students with disabilities. Consequently, many learners continue to face barriers that limit their participation and performance. Therefore, assessing the role of educational technology in promoting inclusive education is necessary to understand its impact and identify ways to improve its application in Nigerian schools.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many schools in Nigeria recognize the importance of inclusive education, but few have the resources or knowledge to implement it effectively through technology. Some students with disabilities remain excluded from digital learning because of limited access to devices or specialized software. In some cases, teachers do not receive adequate training on how to use assistive technologies in the classroom.
Furthermore, poor internet infrastructure and insufficient government support hinder the progress of inclusive education. These limitations make it difficult to achieve the goal of providing equal educational opportunities for all learners. As such, there is a pressing need to examine how educational technology contributes to inclusive education and how it can be improved to better support students with disabilities.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
Aim:
To examine the role of educational technology in promoting inclusive education for learners with disabilities.
Objectives:
-
To identify the types of educational technologies used to support learners with disabilities.
-
To examine how educational technology enhances inclusive learning environments.
-
To assess the challenges teachers and students face when using educational technologies.
-
To recommend strategies for improving the use of educational technology in inclusive education.
1.4 Research Questions
-
What types of educational technologies are used to support learners with disabilities?
-
How does educational technology promote inclusive learning environments?
-
What challenges affect the use of educational technologies in inclusive classrooms?
-
What strategies can improve the application of technology in inclusive education?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and educational planners on how technology can support inclusive education. For teachers, the study will highlight effective technological tools that can enhance teaching and learning for students with disabilities. Policymakers will benefit from understanding the areas that require investment, such as teacher training and infrastructure development.
The study will also serve as a reference for researchers and institutions seeking to develop more inclusive learning systems. For students with disabilities, the research findings will help create awareness of available technologies that can make learning easier and more engaging. Ultimately, the study will contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 4, which emphasizes inclusive and equitable quality education for all learners.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on selected secondary and tertiary institutions in Nigeria that integrate educational technology in teaching learners with disabilities. It examines both assistive and digital learning tools used to promote inclusion. The study will not cover non-formal educational settings or private tutoring systems.
