The Role of Environmental Education in Promoting Sustainable Waste Management in Secondary Schools in Enugu State
CHAPTER ONE
1.0 Introduction
Environmental education plays a vital role in shaping attitudes and behaviors that promote sustainability. As environmental challenges continue to escalate globally, it becomes increasingly important to integrate environmental knowledge into all levels of education. Waste management, in particular, is one of the areas that benefit greatly from environmental awareness and education. Schools serve as strategic institutions for nurturing environmentally responsible citizens who can contribute to sustainable development.
In Enugu State, improper waste disposal in schools and surrounding communities has become a major environmental concern. Littering, open dumping, and lack of recycling facilities are common problems that degrade the school environment and pose health risks to students. Consequently, environmental education becomes a necessary tool for building awareness and promoting positive attitudes towards sustainable waste management practices among students and teachers.
1.1 Background to the Study
Environmental education refers to a process that allows individuals to explore environmental issues, engage in problem-solving, and take informed actions to improve environmental conditions. According to Okafor and Eze (2022), integrating environmental education into the school curriculum enhances students’ understanding of environmental problems and fosters responsible behavior.
Sustainable waste management is one of the most pressing environmental issues facing developing nations, including Nigeria. In many schools across Enugu State, waste is often disposed of indiscriminately due to inadequate waste bins, poor sanitation facilities, and lack of awareness. This situation not only creates an unsightly learning environment but also exposes students to diseases and pollution.
Through environmental education, students can learn about the importance of waste reduction, recycling, and reuse. Moreover, they can develop habits that encourage proper disposal and active participation in maintaining clean surroundings. Teachers also play a significant role by incorporating environmental topics into classroom discussions and practical activities. Therefore, understanding the role of environmental education in promoting sustainable waste management in secondary schools is essential for improving school sanitation and building environmentally conscious citizens.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite increasing awareness of environmental issues in Nigeria, many secondary schools still lack effective environmental education programs. In Enugu State, most schools face poor waste management practices, leading to littered compounds, blocked drainage, and unpleasant odors. Students often lack knowledge about proper waste handling and the long-term effects of poor disposal practices.
Additionally, limited environmental policies, inadequate funding, and lack of teacher training further weaken the promotion of environmental education. While some schools have environmental clubs, many of these initiatives remain inactive due to lack of support and materials. As a result, students fail to develop the knowledge and commitment required to manage waste sustainably.
This study therefore investigates how environmental education influences waste management practices in secondary schools within Enugu State. It seeks to identify the gaps, assess the level of environmental awareness among students and teachers, and suggest ways to strengthen sustainability education in schools.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of this study is to examine the role of environmental education in promoting sustainable waste management in secondary schools in Enugu State.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Assess the level of environmental awareness among students and teachers in secondary schools.
-
Examine the current waste management practices in secondary schools in Enugu State.
-
Determine how environmental education influences students’ waste disposal behavior.
-
Recommend strategies to enhance environmental education for sustainable waste management.
1.4 Research Questions
-
What is the level of environmental awareness among students and teachers in secondary schools in Enugu State?
-
What are the existing waste management practices in these schools?
-
How does environmental education influence students’ attitudes toward sustainable waste management?
-
What strategies can improve the implementation of environmental education in secondary schools?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it emphasizes the role of environmental education in addressing school-related waste problems. By identifying how knowledge influences behavior, it provides insights that can help educators, policymakers, and school administrators develop more effective environmental programs.
The research also contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4 and SDG 12), which advocate for quality education and responsible consumption and production. Furthermore, the findings will help schools in Enugu State and beyond to adopt environmentally friendly practices, such as waste segregation, composting, and recycling, to ensure a cleaner and healthier learning environment.
Academically, the study adds to existing literature on environmental education and provides a basis for future research on sustainability in educational institutions.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on selected public and private secondary schools in Enugu State. It examines the level of environmental knowledge among students and teachers, the existing waste management practices, and the influence of environmental education on students’ behavior. The research does not cover tertiary institutions or primary schools. Data are obtained through questionnaires, interviews, and school observations.
