The Role of Social Media in Promoting Library Services: A Study of University of Lagos Library
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media has become a powerful tool for communication, information sharing, and engagement. Libraries increasingly use social media platforms to reach users, promote services, and provide updates on resources (Aina, 2019). Social media allows libraries to connect with students, researchers, and the general public in real time.
University of Lagos Library uses platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to inform users about new resources, workshops, and events. These platforms also allow librarians to provide quick assistance and answer queries online (Fawole, 2020). Social media enhances visibility, user engagement, and awareness of library services.
Despite these advantages, some challenges affect the effective use of social media in libraries. These include lack of expertise, inconsistent posting, and low user engagement. Studying the role of social media in promoting library services helps identify strategies to maximize its benefits.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although the University of Lagos Library uses social media, some users are not fully aware of library updates and services. Limited content planning, irregular updates, and low interaction on social media pages reduce its effectiveness. Without proper strategies, social media may not fully promote library services or engage users. Therefore, it is necessary to examine how social media enhances library visibility and service delivery.
