The Role of Storytelling in Enhancing English Language Comprehension
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Storytelling has long been recognized as an effective method for teaching language. In English language education, storytelling helps students develop comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. By listening to stories, students engage with context, characters, and plot, which enhances understanding and retention (Isbell et al., 2004).
Stories provide meaningful and memorable contexts for language learning. They expose students to new vocabulary, sentence structures, and idiomatic expressions. Moreover, storytelling encourages imagination, discussion, and interpretation, which strengthens comprehension skills. Studies show that students who participate in storytelling activities demonstrate better reading and listening comprehension than those taught through conventional methods (Wright, 2010).
In Nigerian schools, traditional English teaching methods often rely on textbooks and rote learning. These methods may fail to engage students or foster deep understanding. Integrating storytelling into lessons offers an interactive approach that makes learning enjoyable and effective. Therefore, examining the role of storytelling in English comprehension can provide insights for improving teaching strategies.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many students struggle with understanding English texts, despite exposure to lessons and exercises. Teachers report difficulties in students’ reading comprehension, vocabulary retention, and interpretation of texts. Traditional teaching methods may not provide sufficient context or engagement for effective learning. Furthermore, limited research exists on the impact of storytelling on students’ comprehension in Nigerian schools. This study aims to investigate how storytelling enhances English language comprehension.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the role of storytelling in enhancing English language comprehension.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Identify the types of storytelling techniques used in English language teaching.
-
Assess the effect of storytelling on students’ vocabulary and comprehension.
-
Examine students’ engagement and interest during storytelling activities.
-
Recommend strategies for effectively integrating storytelling into English lessons.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions:
-
What types of storytelling techniques are used in English language classes?
-
How does storytelling affect students’ vocabulary and comprehension?
-
How does storytelling influence students’ engagement and interest in learning English?
-
What strategies can improve the use of storytelling in teaching English?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study benefits students, teachers, curriculum planners, and researchers. Students will understand how storytelling can enhance comprehension and vocabulary. Teachers can adopt effective storytelling methods to engage learners and improve performance. Curriculum planners may integrate storytelling into English programs to encourage active learning. Researchers will gain insights into innovative approaches for language teaching and comprehension development.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on secondary school students in Nigeria. It examines the use of storytelling techniques and their effect on English comprehension. The research does not cover other subjects or students at tertiary levels. It is limited to classroom-based storytelling activities conducted in English.
1.7 Operational Definition of Terms

Comprehension: The ability to understand, interpret, and recall written or spoken English.
Vocabulary: The range of words students understand and use in English.
