The Use of Open Educational Resources (OER) in Enhancing Learning in Nigerian Universities: A Study of University of Ibadan
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Open Educational Resources (OER) are freely accessible teaching, learning, and research materials. They include textbooks, course materials, videos, and articles that can be used, adapted, and shared. OER provides students and lecturers with additional learning resources that support academic success (Aina, 2019).
The University of Ibadan has integrated OER into teaching and learning. Students can access online textbooks, video lectures, and interactive materials. Lecturers can use OER to supplement classroom instruction and provide diverse learning opportunities (Fawole, 2020). OER promotes self-directed learning and helps bridge resource gaps in higher education.
Despite the benefits, some challenges hinder the effective use of OER. These include limited internet access, lack of awareness, and insufficient training for both students and lecturers. Studying the use of OER will help understand its impact on learning and identify strategies to enhance its adoption.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although OER offers significant learning benefits, some students and lecturers do not use them effectively. Limited access to the internet, lack of awareness of available resources, and inadequate training reduce their utilization. These challenges may prevent students from fully benefiting from OER, affecting academic outcomes. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the use of OER and its influence on learning in Nigerian universities.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the use of Open Educational Resources in enhancing learning at the University of Ibadan.
The specific objectives are to
-
identify the types of OER available to students and lecturers
-
assess how students and lecturers use OER for learning and teaching
-
examine the challenges faced in using OER
-
suggest strategies to improve the adoption and use of OER
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions
-
What types of OER are available to students and lecturers
-
How do students and lecturers use OER in learning and teaching
-
What challenges are faced in using OER
-
What strategies can enhance the use of OER in universities
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study will help university administrators and librarians understand the benefits and challenges of OER. It will guide strategies to improve access, training, and awareness. Students and lecturers will benefit by maximizing the use of OER for effective learning and teaching. The study will also contribute to academic literature on digital learning resources in Nigeria.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on students and lecturers at the University of Ibadan. It examines the types of OER available, usage patterns, challenges, and strategies to improve adoption. The study does not cover universities outside Nigeria.
1.7 Definition of Key Terms
