Use of Mobile Applications for Library Services: Case Study of University of Ibadan
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Mobile applications have transformed access to information in academic libraries. These applications allow students and staff to access library services directly from smartphones or tablets, providing convenience and flexibility (Aina, 2019). Library mobile apps can include features such as online catalogues, e-book access, notifications, borrowing and return services, and research assistance.
The University of Ibadan Library has introduced mobile applications to enhance library services. Students can search for resources, reserve books, download e-books, and receive updates on library activities using these apps. Mobile applications complement traditional library services and reduce the need for physical visits, making information access more efficient (Fawole, 2020).
The use of mobile applications in libraries promotes self-directed learning and improves academic performance. Students can access course materials anytime, engage with digital content, and collaborate with peers. Library staff can monitor usage patterns, provide remote assistance, and improve resource management. Research has shown that mobile applications can increase library engagement, reduce delays in resource access, and support learning outcomes (Ajiboye & Olojede, 2018).
Despite these advantages, challenges exist in the implementation and use of mobile applications. Limited smartphone ownership, poor internet connectivity, lack of technical support, and low awareness among students can reduce utilization. Understanding how mobile applications affect library service delivery is essential to optimize their effectiveness and maximize benefits for users.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although mobile applications are available at the University of Ibadan Library, some students do not fully utilize these tools. Limited awareness, lack of digital skills, connectivity issues, and insufficient support can hinder effective usage. Additionally, some mobile applications may have usability issues or technical glitches that reduce their functionality. These challenges limit the potential of mobile applications to enhance library services and support students’ academic performance.
There is also limited research on the impact of mobile library applications in Nigerian universities. Understanding students’ usage patterns, perceptions, and challenges is necessary to improve mobile library services and ensure that digital tools meet users’ needs effectively.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the use of mobile applications for library services at the University of Ibadan.
The specific objectives are to
-
identify the mobile applications used for library services
-
assess the frequency and purpose of mobile application usage by students
-
examine students’ perceptions and satisfaction with mobile library services
-
identify challenges affecting the use of mobile applications in the library
-
recommend strategies to improve mobile library services for students
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions
-
What mobile applications are used for library services at the University of Ibadan
-
How frequently do students use these applications, and for what purposes
-
What are students’ perceptions and satisfaction levels regarding mobile library services
-
What challenges affect the use of mobile applications in the library
-
What strategies can improve mobile library services for students
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for students, librarians, and university administrators. For students, mobile library applications provide convenient and efficient access to resources, enabling them to complete assignments, conduct research, and study effectively. Understanding the benefits and challenges of these tools will encourage better usage and improve academic outcomes.
For librarians, the study highlights usage patterns, satisfaction levels, and areas requiring improvement. Librarians can use this information to enhance the functionality of mobile applications, provide training, and improve support services for students.
University administrators will benefit by understanding the value of investing in mobile library applications, infrastructure, and technical support. Effective mobile library services can increase resource utilization, enhance student satisfaction, and support academic excellence. The study also contributes to academic literature on digital innovations in Nigerian university libraries.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the use of mobile applications for library services at the University of Ibadan. It examines the types of applications, usage patterns, student perceptions, challenges, and strategies for improvement. The study targets undergraduate and postgraduate students who use mobile applications to access library resources. Other universities and non-academic libraries are excluded. Both academic and administrative functions available through mobile applications are considered, while non-digital library resources are not included.
